The Complete Guide to a Social Media Detox
Why and how to do a social media detox. From 24-hour resets to 30-day challenges, find the approach that works for you.
Why Take a Social Media Detox?
Social media is engineered for engagement, not wellbeing. Endless scroll, likes, and FOMO keep your dopamine system in overdrive. A social media detox gives your brain a chance to reset, and often reveals how much calmer and more present you can feel without it.
Choosing Your Detox Length
24–48 hours: A quick reset. Good for testing the waters. One week: Enough to notice mood and focus changes. 30 days: A full habit reset; many people find they don't miss it. Start with what feels achievable and extend if you want to go deeper.
Before You Start
Log out on all devices. Delete apps from your phone (you can reinstall later). Tell a friend so you have accountability. Have a plan for boredom: books, walks, calls, or projects. Use Rewire to log urges to check. You'll see them peak and then drop over a few days.
After the Detox
Reintroduce with intention. Decide in advance what you'll use each platform for and set time limits. Many people return with one app, or only on desktop. The goal isn't never again. It's using social media on your terms.
